Planet Comicon 2016!

May 29, 2016

Last week Kansas City hosted Planet Comicon, my primary local comic book convention. Every year it grows in size; in attendance, show room floor, guests... everything. This year was no exception, and it was a pretty big deal.

With my wife and comic partner in crime.

For starters, usually there are a lot of celebrity media guests. In the past I've voiced my concern that the media guests could take away from the comic part of comicon. That and I just don't have the cash to drop for photos and an autograph. Luckily I had some help on that front, and got to meet a few of them. First of which would be my meeting of George Takei... in my hotel lobby. Nothing quite like sharing a turbo lift with Mr. Sulu.

My lucky run in with a Starfleet officer.

From there I saw Jason Mewes and Ming Chen, both of various Viewaskew productions. Both were super nice. I even got to talk up DMI to Ming, which was pretty cool.

But the headliner of the show was the face of Marvel comics himself, Stan Lee. And oh yes, I was able to get a photo and a comic signed by the man.

My picture of a picture of Stan Lee.

This guy is seriously funny.

Kansas City is lucky to have a great group of local talent. Most of them know me (if not by name) and I see them around at various events. So it's the people from out of town I look forward to meeting for the first time. More often than not I take the opportunity to spread the gospel of DMI. Didn't really do that this go round, but I did get a chance to thank Amanda Conner in person for her contribution. I was very happy to do this, shake her hand and get an updated photo with her. She is an awesome individual.

Amanda Conner folks.

And finally, what about comics? In past years I had not hit up many venders. Usually I keep an eye out for $1 comic boxes, and haven't found many. This year however, there were deals everywhere. Like 2, 3 and 4 for a $1. Unheard of. And I picked up some high dollar books. I'm usually trigger shy when it comes to spending for big books, but not this year.

It was a good show this year.

2010 DMI Artist Update: Part 4

February 20, 2010

Moving right along to a section of DC artists right now. After rapping up her run on the mini-series Terra, it conveniently lead to her next assignment on Power Girl. Power Girl is now Amanda Conner's character. After a great story working on her over in JSA: Classified, I've enjoyed her solo series and I hope both it and Amanda's work continues for the title for some time.

Lee Garbett's short story arc on what was a great restart for the Outsiders moved him over to start anew on another Bat title: Batgirl. He's been doing great over on her title too, the man can do no wrong. Still not a fan of other characters being tossed into limbo all the time in the DCU (i.e. Cassandra Cain), but that is to no fault of Mr. Garbett.

Guillem March just recent wrote and drew on the latest issue of Gotham City Sirens. Paul Dini will be back on regular writing duties come next issue, but congrats to Guillem for as he states on his blog, "very special issue to me. I´m satisfied as I´m not been since long ago with my work, though many people may consider this issue just another fill-in, and they are not wrong at all."

Thanks to all these artists again for helping me in my campaign. Again pointing out a nice run of DC books on the list, just giving props to the company that was my starter drug to this wonderful hobby of comics!

Ninth Appearance! Terra #4 by Amanda Conner!

December 10, 2008

Perseverance pays.

During my one and only trip to San Diego Comic Con in 2006, I had the great pleasure of meeting Amanda during a signing. It was with that trip I officially started off Draw Me In, however I was finding it difficult to approach people with it. So many great opportunities were passed up, including this one. Oh, had I only knew ahead of time how much effort it would take to gain an audience with her a second time, flying halfway across the country was the easy way out.

I included Amanda in my first wave of artists I had sent out. I sent it care of DC Comics, which I now know better not to do. In October I tracked down Jimmy Palmiotti on the internet in an effort to reach Amanda, after a bit of back and forth with him he said he’d “forward my message”.

Come August the following year I wised up and sent her a letter c/o Image. I tried this once more in May 2008, and that’s when I got the e-mail!

She wrote that she would draw me in and also with the scene in mind, also draw my girlfriend as well. Something I didn’t mind at all, a nice touch.

Thank you Amanda Conner, for helping a fanboy out.
